Gems - Useful Websites List

The Internet is a treasure trove for finding content, learning new things, exploring our world and enjoying ways to change our perspective on things we care about.

I intend this to become a list of jewels that I and others have discovered on our huge network of available information, repositories, software and much more. I’m constantly on the lookout for what I would call ‘gems’ that I have discovered over my long career on the Internet hoping this list keeps growing all the time.

This list is for sites and pages you wish you knew existed but you haven’t discovered yet, until now. The list is not in any specific order or a specific topic.

If you have any suggestions for great resources, feel free to send them to gems@cdahmedeh.net

MALWARE Protection

Malicious software has become very sophisticated these days and find there ways onto your computer by surprise. Now they come in all shapes and sizes for all major operating systems.

Now one thing I want to make clear, nothing will beat being careful, catching social engineering tricks, be weary of attachments even from those who you know and so on. Most major operating systems like Windows and macOS already come with some anti-malware protection of some kind and I honestly recommend these the most as they use the least resources and are fully integrated into your system. However, some will swear by a certain program and I won’t be making any judgements here. Do your research.

  • uBlock Origin (https://ublockorigin.com)

Adblockers have become more than tools to hide annoying ads from websites you visit on the Internet. They contain lists that block malware, tracking and other software with malicious features. By default, most malicious areas will be blocked by the default lists. However, if you want more protection, the extension allows you to include additional filters and region specific ones. I see adblocker as a ‘prevention is better than cure’ kind of solution which will keep you away from most malicious places on the Internet before something gets on your computer. This doesn’t mean you should browse carelessly however, use your knowledge and your gut. Finally, this extension is available for almost all major browsers.

Piracy

Piracy is a very controversial topic in the land of the interwebs. Some see is an evil necessity while other’s think it’s a crime that it should be punished for. Although I purchase most software that I use on a regular basis, less important things don’t get that treatment.

There may be a language barrier but a simple translation feature such as the one found in Google Chrome will help you get along. You do need an ad-blocker installed with the Russian filters enabled.
